Non-anaemic Iron Deficiency

چکیده
Iron balance is regulated by absorption of iron rather than by excretion, because humans cannot actively excrete iron. Iron is absorbed from the small intestine. The regulation of iron absorption and transport is complex; there seems to be an important role for hepcidin, a hormone secreted by the liver. Iron is lost from the body through sloughed skin cells and sloughed enterocytes from the gut, and through any form of blood loss. A mature fetus has iron stores, which are required because breast-feeding does not meet the infant's iron requirements. Low birthweight babies lack this store. Iron requirements increase at times of growth (early childhood and adolescence); during pregnancy and with menstruation. Dietary iron is in two forms, haem iron (the organic form, mainly found in meat) and non-haem iron (the inorganic form, mainly from plants). Haem iron is much better absorbed. Non-haem iron absorption can be improved by meat and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Absorption is inhibited by calcium, phytates (in some plant foods) and polyphenols (in tea and coffee). Iron is present in many foods, so iron intake is partly related to calorie intake.

Significance of a low serum ferritin level in elderly in-patients.
Iron deficiency, defined as a serum ferritin level less than or equal to 50 micrograms/l was found in 28 (11%) of 252 consecutive elderly in-patients (mean age 81 years). Sixteen among them were anaemic and only five had a microcytic anaemia. In a separate study, 15 anaemic and 13 non-anaemic iron-deficient elderly in-patients were investigated in order to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointes...
متن کاملIron status of babies born to iron-deficient anaemic mothers in an Iranian hospital.
We investigated the relation between maternal anaemia and neonatal iron status in 97 mothers and their babies. Haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, total iron binding capacity and serum ferritin were determined. Mothers were divided into 3 groups: iron-deficient anaemic (22.7%), non-anaemic iron-deficient (27.8%) and non-anaemic non-iron-deficient (49.5%). There was no significant difference in the me...
متن کاملPrevalence of Iron-deficiency Anaemia among University Students in Noakhali Region, Bangladesh
Iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a common health problem in rural women and young children of Bangladesh. The university students usually take food from residential halls, and the food value of their diets is not always balanced. This cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia among the university students of Noakhali region, Bangladesh. Haemoglobi...
متن کاملPrevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in anaemic under-5 children in Enugu South East Nigeria
Background: Iron deficiency anaemia has been described as the commonest type of nutritional anaemia in infancy and childhood. The associated adverse health sequelae include permanent behavioural and cognitive impairments. Early detection and prompt treatment are necessary to prevent these complications. Aim: To determine the prevalence and socio-demographic distribution of iron deficiency anaem...
متن کاملAnaemia during pregnancy as a risk factor for iron-deficiency anaemia in infancy: a case-control study in Jordan.
BACKGROUND A high prevalence of 50-65% iron-deficiency anaemia in mothers and infants in Jordan was reported by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in 1990. Iron-deficiency in infancy has been shown to delay cognitive and psychomotor development with long-term consequences. While socioeconomic deprivation and inadequate nutrition are known underlying factors, it is unclear whethe...
متن کاملCourse and characteristics of anaemia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis of recent onset.
OBJECTIVE To describe the incidence, cause, and course of anaemia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Medical records of 225 patients who received a diagnosis of RA between 1990 and 1992 were reviewed longitudinally for mention of anaemia. Anaemia was classified as anaemia of chronic disease if ferritin concentrations reflected adequate body iron stores. Among iron depleted anaemic patients...
